Be Proactive About Home Security
from:Keeping home and family safe is important to all of us but often, we don’t take action until something unpleasant happens and drives home how important it really is to be proactive and take steps to protect our families and our homes. For example, far too many people die each year because there are no working smoke detectors in the home. I say “working” because while there are smoke detectors in the home, either the battery is missing or it is simply dead and should have been replaced.
While smoke detectors that go off every time someone cooks can be annoying, it is simply too risky to disconnect them or take the battery out. Instead, open a window, use a fan, or install a vent hood over the stove to make sure that smoke and odors are being eliminated. Smoke detectors are there to save your life and the lives of your family members and should never, ever be disabled. In fact, you should test them once a month to make sure they are still working and replace the battery on a regular basis. Many experts suggest checking your smoke detectors at the beginning or end of daylight savings time because you are resetting your clocks and that is another chore you could do quickly.
Use Timers and Lights for Home Security
Whether or not you have a home security system installed, making good use of lighting and timers can help to protect your home and your family. Burglars like to work in the dark so make sure your home is one they will want to pass up by installing outside motion detectors that will turn lights on when motion is detected. These same outside lights can be used to prevent spills and falls as they will come on when they sense your motion in the dark as well. Keep entryways, driveways, and any area where there are steps well lit and you will help to prevent dangerous falls and you will also help to prevent intruders from sneaking around in the dark.
Fire Extinguishers
Keep fire extinguishers on every floor of your home and teach everyone in the family how and when to use them. Keep one in the kitchen as well and another one in the garage or workshop. Make sure you get the appropriate kind of fire extinguishers and teach your family never to pour water on electrical fires or grease fires. Keeping a fire extinguisher in your vehicle is also a good idea as well.
