Do You Have the Right Electrical Tools and Supplies?

from:

It is essential that you have the proper tools when working on electrical projects. This is no area to cut corners on. The right electrical tools and supplies not only help you to get the job done, but they are designed to keep you safe as well. We’ll take a look at some of the most common electrical tools and supplies you’ll need for DIY jobs you may be working on.

Voltage Tester

This is a must have for working on even the simplest of electrical tasks. While there are different types, the main function of the voltage tester is to let you know whether there is electrical current present. The most basic kind has two wires; one goes on a neutral part of the outlet, such as the screw or a white wire and the other one needs to touch the hot wire, which is usually black, but may be red. Once both wires are connected, if the light on the tester comes on then you know there is electrical current present.

It costs a little more, but you can buy the kind of voltage tester that actually plugs into the outlet. Aptly named the plug tester, this one will not only verify whether or not current is present, but it will also tell you if the outlet is wired correctly. You can also get a digital voltage meter, which will tell you exactly how much electrical current is present.

Other Tools

The voltage tester or meter is important as it will let you know immediately whether or not electricity is getting to the outlet. But there are several other tools that you need to have on hand if you are going to be working on anything electric. These tools should have insulated handles, which will offer further protection against electrical shock. You will need to have on hand screwdrivers of various sizes, both Philips and flat-head. You will also need wire cutters and wire strippers. Needle nose pliers may be necessary when working in tight places. You may find it necessary to use a soldering iron from time to time as well.

Electrical Supplies

Black electrical tape is a staple of any electrician’s toolbox so be sure and have plenty of this on hand. You’ll may also need to have a supply of leads, probes, and clips. You can probably find a small kit that will serve you well through a variety of electrical repair or wiring jobs. Make sure that you have the right tools for the job before you get started not only so you can do the job right, but also to stay safe.
