General Skylight Information

from:

When it comes to improving the overall beauty of a room, skylights can add an extra touch of beauty and allow more natural light to enter a room at the same time. There are many types of skylights that can be built into the roof to allow the natural light to flood the indoor space. They are also very good conductors of heat in cooler weather and can channel the sun’s heat rays inside. But they can also channel the sun’s rays in hot weather too!

Before you make decisions about installing a skylight, make sure you know the facts first. Understanding as much as possible about skylights before you make purchasing decisions will save you disappointment, frustration, and money in the long-term.

1. Skylights are notorious for allowing heat or cool air to escape from your house. This can cause your heating and air conditioning system to run more than necessary. Consider the location of the proposed skylight and how much exposure it has to direct sunlight, trees, and other potential outdoor encumbrances. If the skylight gets a lot of direct sunlight for a good period of the day, you may want to reconsider.

2. There are skylights which allow air to flow through by opening vents that were installed along with the skylight. General skylight information often excludes this information so it’s important to evaluate this option. If the skylight is in a room where cross-ventilation or air flow is important, a ventilating skylight may be just what you need.

3. Skylights come in a variety of shapes and sizes and installing skylights requires a thorough evaluation of all types. You can purchase square, rectangular, round, pyramid, dome, and many other types. Search for the type of skylight that fits best with your overall home aesthetics. Make sure you don’t purchase a skylight that is too big for your space which is a common mistake made by many people. And also keep in mind that a skylight allows at least 30% more light to enter the room than traditional side windows.

4. Skylights generally come in glass or acrylic. Both materials are substantial and have their own pros and cons. There are also many new types of coatings and glazes available on today’s skylights which help filter light, increase stability, and protect against harmful sun’s rays which enter the window.

5. ALL skylights can be coated with UV shield to make them safer. General skylight installation should definitely consider this option.

Skylights offer a dramatic and pleasing affect to rooms and they allow more natural light to enter the room. They are especially appealing for family rooms, kitchens, and baths. Consider installing skylights in your home and research all general skylight information before you proceed. You’ll be glad you took the time to find the many advantages of various types of skylights.
