Replacing Storm and Screen Windows
from:Storm and screen windows can be a good addition to any home. Having these types of additions to the windows of your home can lead to greater energy efficiency and a more comfortable indoor environment. They also help protect your windows and they even protect your indoor furnishings such as blinds, curtains, floors, and furniture because they come with special protective coatings to filter out harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays.
The most economical type of windows are typically single paned windows and that’s what most contractors use on homes they build. Unfortunately, these are also the less energy efficient type of windows and they allow cold air and heat from the outside to infiltrate your home more easily. They also allow the heat and air conditioning to escape more readily, causing your energy bills to be higher than they need to be.
Storm windows can make a big difference in the energy efficiency and comfort of your home. Installing storm windows is usually a simple process and they come in a variety of standards sizes and shapes to fit most any window area. Most storm or screen windows come with easy to install instructions, materials, and kits that make them user-friendly for the do-it-yourselfer who wants to save money on home maintenance.
There are two options for windows:
1. Temporary storm windows and screens
Temporary storm and screen windows are more popular today because they don’t detract from the actual view when they’re not in use. Many styles can be quickly and easily folded and stored away. They are many different styles that simply fit right into the window casing and are expandable and retractable so they fit most any size opening. The permanent window is then pulled down to hold them in place. They can be easily removed.
2. Permanent storm windows and screens
These are permanently installed and easily maneuvered up or down when needed. The latest designs offer screens that are permanently attached to main windows and they are very non-intrusive. There are standard storm windows and screens that fit traditional windows and can be installed in the existing window opening.
In addition to the above, you can also purchase custom storm windows and screens for unusually shaped window openings, doors, and other openings.
Regardless of whether you choose temporary or permanent storm windows and screens, they offer a lot of advantages. They help insulate your home and also afford you the availability of using the natural air and coolness from the outside by using screens when weather permits.
Other important reasons to install storm windows and screens include:
· Energy efficiency
· Protect windows
· Protect furnishings inside the home
· Keep cold winter air from causing discomfort during winter
· Reduce condensation that can erode window casings and surrounding areas
· Reduce noise levels from the outside
· Contribute to a “green” environment
If you are in the process of replacing windows or installing new ones, it’s a good time to think about storm windows and screens for your home. They are a cost-effective way to improve and increase the energy efficiency of your home. They also contribute to your own level of comfort during extremely hot or cold weather. And just as importantly, they offer protection against the weather elements that can erode and damage windows. In the long-term, they can save a homeowner lots of money and frustration with less money wasted.
