How to prevent unwanted problems while insulating basement walls?

from:

Everything is as strong as its weakest link, more so, if it is as stable as your home. Basements are often the odd man out, as they are the best places for the builder to manipulate. Cheap items are often used which you will never get to know. And that is primarily why you find certain houses collapsing in 5 years or even less. To be sure, you need to keep the problems associated with basements out.

Insulation

If you are making your own house on a plot, try making a good mixture of sand, clay and concrete hold your house. Sand is a good water absorber and layers of these things ensure that the water damage is least. This is the strategy adopted while making the football fields and cricket pitches. Keep it well insulated with Bakelite and terra firma. Just make the basement porous and impartial to any intrusion.

Heating

Just keep the home temperature regulated. You may take care of this with central air condition ducts, heaters and furnaces. Don’t leave any holes on the basement especially near the sewage. Water will seep through and definitely cause problems in that case. No dampness should be allowed in the house. Keeping the floors too clean, so that even minor cracks and errors are detected also ensures this. It is your house and so do the needful.

Solid concrete stains, foams, plastic and fireclay are good options to keep the floor configuration intact. Spending extra there should not be a problem as the results will be long term.

Plaster walls and good primer painting on the roof also helps. After all, the house is an organism where every part complements each other. You should understand that faulty walls and ceilings may ultimately affect your basements too.

Technical gaps

The size of windows should be proportional to the size of the walls. There will be summers and winters and contracting and expanding will occur respectively. There are many metal items underneath the basement and walls and they will also be affected. So, you must not make it over ventilated nor too stuffy. The passage of air should also touch the basement. This is the primary cause why Roman blinds and bay windows are so popular in mansions.

Your wood installations and even the earth ones, like fireplace should be properly cleaned and presentable. Water logging should not be allowed even in the neighboring gardens. Always vacuum clean the pores and little apertures on the basements and keep the installations properly screwed or else water will flow in and reach your basement in a short while.

Over all, keep a professional handy to make a technical survey every two to four months. Don’t be a laggard in this as your home is a precious possession.
