Schedule Home Maintenance for Best Results

from:

Home ownership comes with a wide array of responsibilities, not the least of which is home repair and maintenance. Before you get bogged down with task after task that needs attending to, why not be proactive and schedule your home maintenance tasks?

Most homeowners can take care of most home maintenance tasks and even much of the repair but there will be some tasks for which you will need to call in a professional. Schedule service calls on your days off, if possible, well before you actually need the service so it doesn’t become a more expensive and hectic undertaking.

Things will go smoother if you also schedule the home maintenance and repair tasks you are doing yourself. Some of these tasks need to be done according to the season and others you can just schedule as you have time. Another good way to schedule home maintenance tasks when the supplies you need are on sale. For example, the time to restock your linen cabinet would be in January when the “white sale” is on. Office supplies, including filing cabinets and shredders are always on sale in the spring, leading up to tax time. You’ll also find many types of school and office supplies on sale just before school starts in the fall. Try to match the task at hand with sales and you’ll save quite a bit on your home maintenance needs.

Planning and scheduling your home maintenance and repair tasks also means planning for them financially. Try to set aside a certain amount of money each month into a household account used only for this purpose. That way, you will be ready when it is time to perform selected tasks and even more important, you will be prepared in case there is an emergency, such as a water heater needing replacement or something even bigger, like your home heating system.

Performing regular home maintenance may also increase the value of your home and will be evident should you ever decide to sell. In addition, you won’t have to try and do everything at once, which is both expensive and backbreaking. Taking care of your home on both the inside and the outside is a huge job, but will be well worth it in the long run.

Whether you have a pool or a garden or just like to have a well taken care of yard, the outside of your home is just as important as the inside and it can also be expensive if left untended. Repair fences, gutters, roofs, and anything that needs attention at the first sign of disrepair or you could face a large repair bill later. Store patio furniture and outside implements away for the winter so they will be in good shape when you take them out again. When you take good care of your home, you make it easier for your home to take care of you.
