Which Tools are Necessary for Home Maintenance?
from:Having the right tools and supplies is essential to the maintenance of your home. While it can be expensive if you have to purchase them all at once, if you get them a little at a time, it won’t hurt so bad. In addition, there are many good used tools on the market and if you shop wisely, you will find some great deals. Let’s look at a few of the tools you will need to keep your home in good working order.
Outside
Depending on your interests, there are a lot of outdoor tools and supplies you might need. You will most likely need a lawn mower and an edger to keep your lawn looking nice. You may also need pruning shears to prune back branches and bushes. If you plan to garden, there are a variety of gardening tools you will need. You can really go crazy here or just stick with the basics. Some people buy or rent tillers to break up the soil and others do it with hand tools so it may depend on how hard your soil is. Most people like to have rakes and hoes for outside work and hoes are great for weeding in the garden and all around the yard as well.
Inside
Most people just need a basic tool set for working around the home, such as a hammer, several sizes and kinds of screwdrivers, pliers, crescent wrench, and a basic wrench set, especially if you plan to put anything together, like toys or household items. Tools are a great thing to buy used because you can see exactly what you are getting without having to worry about whether they work or not. Of course, if you’re buying power tools, that’s another story.
If you’re planning on doing any electrical work, you will want to make sure you have rubber handled tools instead of just plain metal. While these are slightly more expensive, the rubber insulation is there for your safety so you really don’t want to scrimp on tools that are built to keep you safe.
Supplies and Other Tools
It’s a good idea to keep a supply of nails and screws and nuts and bolts around. Duct tape is another staple that you will find many uses for. Use electrical tape if you are working with electricity. You may also need a drill and if you can afford it, a cordless screwdriver is really nice to have around. If you’re into building things, you may want to get a sander or you can just use sandpaper without the sander if you won’t be sanding very often.
It really doesn’t cost a whole lot to get just the tools and supplies you really need to maintain your home but if you are a do-it-yourselfer you may want to start a collection of the tools you will use most often. For tools that you may use only once or twice, you might consider renting or borrowing them.
