Flooring Structure Replace or Build On Top?
from:If you are planning to install a new flooring structure, get started! Before you do, there are a few things you do have to think about and plan for. For example, before installing any flooring components, the first step is to ensure the flooring is laid on a clean and smooth surface. It must be perfectly level when compacted to ensure that the flooring is going to be level within the home. More so, it is critical to build a sound base that allows for the rest of the flooring construction to be sound literally from the ground up.
If you are installing new wood flooring, you may be placing it on top of the previous floor covering (or you may be removing that and using the preexisting floor joists) or you may be using other methods. You can update existing wood floors that are in good condition or you can use a new plywood subfloor altogether. Some people want to remove the wood they currently have as their flooring structure and instead replace it with a moisture proof concrete slab instead. These are all good options, in most cases.
Using Existing Flooring
Why would you want to install a new flooring on top of the existing floor? It may sound strange since usually you want to remove as much of the old as possible before adding more to it. The problem is, you can save yourself a lot of hard work and messy problems by simply placing the new wood floor over the top of the old. Plus, doing this also gives you an added benefit of soundproofing. You also get one more layer of protection from moisture and an added way to keep your home insulated.
On the other hand, when considering this process, also keep in mind that adding an new floor on top of the old floor may not be a good idea if the new flooring would raise the level of the floor too much. This could be a problem for areas that are not being redone, such as in doorways as well as in adjoining rooms. Also, keep in mind that another disadvantage is that any irregularities that are found in your existing flooring will need to be repaired before you can actually install the new flooring.
In either situation, it is important to take steps to protect the flooring's quality. In other words, you want to ensure the flooring is strong, well built and leveled. Take the time to work out the right solution for your home, paying close attention to the composition of the flooring. For example, if the old floor structure is weather beaten or decaying, removing it really may be your only option.
