Repairing Ceramic Flooring Chips And Cracks

from:

Once you have installed your amazing ceramic flooring, you can sit back and enjoy it. The problem is, even when the best job has been done, there are instances when you will have cracks and chips in the tile that do need to be repaired. If you avoid repairing them, you decrease the overall quality of the flooring. More so, you could be creating a dangerous situation: these chips can hurt should someone hit their foot on them.

Types And Methods Of Repair

There are many things that can happen with ceramic flooring. Generally, simple things like the grouting repairs are easy to do. You may have to remove and replace complete tiles as well, especially if the crack is significant. In most situations, the process for removing and then replacing the tiles is fairly easy to do, especially if you have installed the tiles yourself and have a bit of a handy ability. It is also important to find out why the tile cracked (too much weight, improperly laid tiled) or something else.

Repairing impact damage is a common situation. Look at the damaged tiles as well as those surrounding it closely. Locate any area where there is damage as those tiles should be removed. The first step is to remove the ground from the boarding tile, along all edges of the cracked tiles. Then, simply use a hammer and chisel to break up the remaining tile. Clean up the flooring under the tile so that there is nothing that could cause it to be uneven. Place a replacement in its place (dry, without any adhesive) to ensure a good fit.

From here, all you need to do is to apply the replacement tile's adhesive to the back (do use a margin trowel and apply at an even pressure. When placing it into the location where it will lie, be sure that the tile is even and press it firmly into place. It needs to be flush and if not, remove and readjust the amount of adhesive used. After the tile has set, usually over night at least, you can mix an apply grout to the top of the tile. You can also use a gum rubber float to replace the grout in some areas.

Repairing ceramic flooring is a process that is likely to be repeated several times over the time you will use the floor. Therefore, it is always a good idea to purchase additional tiles for these instances. In times when you just need to repair the grout, do so by removing the old and replacing with new. Like with the flooring, it is a good idea to keep some grout coloring and mixture on hand for instances when there is a crack or a missing piece.
