Use the Internet to Estimate Remodeling Costs
from:There is almost no subject the Internet doesn’t cover and that includes small home improvement projects and large remodeling projects. While it is much easier to figure out how much a small home improvement project will cost, large remodeling projects are another story altogether. If you will be doing all the work yourself then at least you won’t have to worry about the cost of labor; however, if you have to call in experts like plumbers or electricians then your budget will need to have room for that.
While it will be almost impossible to nail down every single expense, you should try to estimate how much you will be spending and then add 10% to that total to allow for expenses not planned for. Materials will be the easiest expense to budget for because you can shop for them online to get an idea of what they will cost. Still, you will need to be very explicit when you shop for materials as the variation in quality and cost is astronomical. For this reason, the decisions as to exactly which materials you will use will need to be made before you ever start your remodeling project.
Online Calculators
There are some online calculators that you can use to help you to estimate the cost of your remodeling job, but many of these are difficult to use and require you enter a lot of information, including your contact information. For some projects, you might find the renovation project calculator at CNN Money.com helpful, although it only lists 25 projects and average project cost as of 2005. Still, it can help you to get a ballpark figure but you can probably come closer to figuring the cost yourself.
What you will find helpful online is the ease at which you can compare costs between different types of products and different retailers. This is where you can save a lot of time and money because you will, in effect, have all the major retailer’s prices at your fingertips so as you decide which materials to use, you can quickly calculate the costs by looking up the products online. For the most part, you will find that it is easier to estimate the costs yourself rather than using online calculators that will ensure that you are contacted by companies that you have no interest in doing business with.
Remodeling Software
It may be worth it to experiment with remodeling software. Not only can you plan how you will carry out your projects but you can estimate the costs as well. You can choose the materials and where they will go and you’ll be able to see how the project you envision will work with the rest of your home. Remodeling software will let you plan out every phase of your home improvement projects, including the cost and may save you a lot of money, time, and headaches in the end.
