Build Your Own Computer from Scratch
from:Before you decide to build your own computer from scratch, think about what it is you expect to achieve. If you think it is going to be cheaper to build it yourself, you're probably mistaken unless you happen upon an incredible deal. Years ago, that might have been the case, but with the price of computers today, it almost makes more sense to buy one off the shelf. Unless, of course, you have specific reasons for wanting to build your own. In that case, you could actually end up saving money in the long run and at the very least you can ensure you have exactly the kind of system you want.
Benefits of Building Your Own Computer
If you've ever had the experience of attempting to upgrade your computer and then upon opening the case, discovered there was no room for upgrades, you may have decided to build your own next time. The fact is, there's a certain built in obsolescence that some computer manufacturers build into their computers so that, instead of upgrading, you'll be forced to buy a new computer. This can be very frustrating if you're just wanting to upgrade one aspect of your computer system. This is a big reason why those who decide to build their own computers do so.
Moreover, when you are able to add or replace a component in your store bought computer system you have to make sure the components are compatible with each other and you may not be able to get exactly what you want. While the components will still have to be compatible if you build your own computer, you will be able to decide at the outset which components you want to work with so this can be a big plus to the do-it-yourselfer.
Another reason to build your own computer is to ensure that you are getting a quality system with quality components. When you hand-pick your computer components yourself, you know exactly what it is you are getting and you can choose the highest quality if you desire. In addition, you'll be in a much better position to upgrade your computer when the time comes and you may find that you need to upgrade less often when you build your own computer system yourself.
The Downside of Building Your Own Computer
If you know what you're doing, you can build a powerful machine that will serve you well. Do be aware though, that by building it yourself, you're foregoing a warranty and the support you can expect when you purchase one pre-built. While it is true that many of the computer components you buy will come with warranties, the support will be nothing like it is when you can hand off your entire computer to someone behind the counter at your local store and expect them to fix it.
Still, building your own computer can bring you a tremendous amount of satisfaction and if you are comfortable with going through the process and are able to troubleshoot should something go wrong, it can be a great experience.
