Home Automation for Senior Citizens
from:Thanks to medical and technological advances, we’re living longer than ever before and the senior population is growing exponentially. While it’s understandable that senior citizens would want to remain in their homes as long as possible, it can be dangerous and difficult for them to do so. However, installing certain home automation devices can lessen the danger and make certain tasks much more convenient for the elderly, especially if there are physical or mental challenges present.
Home Automation for Safety
There are several safety devices that you can install inside and outside the homes of the elderly to help keep them safe. For example, motion detectors can detect when someone is about to enter a room and turn on the light and then turn it off again when the person leaves the room. Just this one addition could ensure that your loved one is not stumbling around in the dark or fumbling for light switches. In addition, motion sensors outside the home could illuminate walks and entryways, which would not only help to prevent falls but may serve to scare off would be intruders as well.
While there are entire houses dedicated to smart home technology, almost anyone can install one or more home automation devices that will positively impact the lives of those living in the home without straining the wallet too much. You’ve probably seen the commercials about elderly people wearing pendants around their neck so they can call for help by pushing a button on the pendant if they should fall or otherwise need assistance. There are actually several different levels of protection you can offer your loved one depending on how fully you want to automate the home.
Home Security Monitoring
You could actually install cameras throughout the home of your elderly loved one if you wanted to and monitor the entire household via your computer from your home or office. Although this would be a cost-effective way to check in on your loved one, unless you were monitoring the cameras full time, your loved one could still be injured for some time without anyone knowing it or coming to help. You might consider, instead, opting for a home security system that would not only monitor the home for intruders but for fire and other dangerous situations as well. With an active monitoring service engaged 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, your loved one would be protected at all times.
Some of these systems allow two way conversations between the monitoring center and the person in the home so that your loved one can be assured that help is on the way and also so that he or she can communicate directly with the monitoring station as to what the problem is. By making it possible for your loved one to be in direct communication with help at any time of the night or day, you can help to ensure their safety and security.
