Home Entertainment and Cable
from:No matter where you live, you’ll hear complaints about cable service that is too expensive and service that is less than stellar. In fact, more than a few news reports have surfaced about many consumers that have opted to discontinue their cable service in favor of free streaming video over the Internet. Some even connect their computers to their television sets for a more realistic TV viewing experience. Still, when you look at the big picture, cable TV has a lot to offer for your home entertainment needs.
Digital Video Recorders
Consumers have been used to recording their favorite television shows for decades using a VCR but digital video recorders or DVRs offer so much more! You couldn’t watch a show from the beginning while it was still recording with a VCR the way you can with a DVR. Before, if you came home 15 minutes after a show started, even if you had programmed your VCR to record the show, you couldn’t start watching it from the beginning while it was still recording. And of course, with a digital video recorder, you don’t have stacks of tapes or DVDs to keep up with.
Video on Demand
HBO’s video on demand lets you watch a wide variety of shows on demand – whenever you want to instead of worrying about what time they come on. This service is free when you have HBO and many cable companies offer new customers free HBO for a certain amount of time. There are so many options available to digital cable customers that many of them don’t rent movies at all or even bother going out to the movies so when you consider the price of cable television as all or most of your entertainment budget, the price really isn’t all that high at all.
Up to the Minute News
News happens every second of the day and when you have cable TV you are able to see important news events as they happen. While Internet video streaming does offer some news clips, there is nothing like getting the news as it happens in real time. In fact, the cable news stations have become quite interactive as they invite callers to call in to the shows or email them during news broadcasts. Some of the news programs even invite the audience to send text messages as they discuss the hot news of the day. CNN has a platform that they call Ireporters, which are ordinary people who record video of something newsworthy and then upload it through their computer and chosen videos end up playing on CNN. This new interactive platform allows ordinary citizens to participate in newsworthy events in a way never before possible.
Cable TV not only makes it possible to know about what is going on in the world but to be a part of it as well.
